Edward Byatt

Edward Byatt
Born in Lewisham in 1900, Edward, or Teddy as he was known, is a bit of a mystery. In 1911 he was living with his grandmother, Ruth Byatt, at 10 Bridge Terrace. London Road. Quite why Teddy was in St Ives, or his history beforehand, is difficult to understand. There is no trace anywhere of his birth register or census records prior to 1911. Before joining up he was clerk to Mr. E Trench Smith, County Court offices, Huntingdon, and previously junior to Mr Wallis Simpson at the North Hunts Constitutional Offices, St Ives.

Teddy served with the 1/13th Princess Louise's Kensington Battalion, London Regiment. He was killed in action on Monday 2 September 1918, aged just 18yrs, after only seven weeks at the Front. His death was reported in the Hunts Post of 27 September 1918. His grandmother inserted a memorial to him in the Hunts Post of 11 October 1918. The memorial mentions Ruth as his mother, although she is quite clearly shown as his grandmother in the 1911 Census. He is buried at Peronne Communal Cemetery and commemorated on Fenstanton War Memorial.
